Why hail prediction gives contractors a business advantage

Predictive hail technology gives roofing and outdoor contractors more time to protect assets, prepare teams and respond to customers before a storm arrives.

Most weather tools tell contractors what is happening now or what has already happened. Flash Weather takes a different approach by forecasting where hail is expected, when it could arrive and how large it may be before the first hailstone falls. Flash’s predictive hail model uses four years of convective storm data across the continental United States from 2021 through 2024.

Built with a deep learning Conv-GRU architecture, it forecasts hail size and location up to 55 minutes in advance at 1-kilometer horizontal resolution, with updates every five minutes. Its tools include one-hour hail swath predictions, hail size forecasts, minute-specific timing, push notifications and a 5-year lookback tool for historical hail at address-level.

That distinction matters because conventional weather services are largely built around detection. Radar shows rain and hailstones already falling, while alerts generally arrive after a storm has formed and been classified. Those tools can help describe conditions, but they still leave contractors interpreting radar and deciding what may happen next.

Prediction changes that timeline.

For outdoor contractors, additional warning can create time to secure equipment, adjust schedules, protect vehicles and make operational decisions before hail reaches a jobsite. Rather than reacting once conditions deteriorate, teams can prepare around a location-specific forecast.

For roofing contractors, predictive information can also support a faster response after hail moves through an area. Flash Weather says its hail data can feed into customer relationship management systems or Dataforma, generating automated alerts and inspection reports when hail affects a warrantied roof. Hail threat zones can also show forecast impacts over roads and individual parcels.

The business value is time: time to protect assets, organize crews, communicate with customers and prepare a response before competitors relying primarily on detection know where the impact may occur.
