Outdoor structures in Colorado’s foothills must withstand moisture, temperature swings and demanding installation conditions. In this From the Ground Up™ episode, Mark Petri of Petri Building and Design explains how K9 Fasteners supports dependable connections in decks, covered porches, timber accents and other exterior projects.
Mark has worked in the building industry since high school and now focuses primarily on architectural design. Through his work with contractors west of Denver, he has seen how improper fastener selection can compromise exterior construction. Mark explained that one of the most common problems is "using what's on site and not preparing ahead of time.” Crews may use drywall screws, framing nails not rated for exterior construction or fasteners that are too short for the connection, creating potential performance and corrosion concerns.
Mark frequently recommends K9 Fasteners for structural and exterior applications. Their products, such as Huskie™ lag screws are commonly used for multi-ply beams, post-to-beam connections and other structural assemblies. And Doberman™ deck fasteners and Greyhound™ trim fasteners also support applications ranging from decking and joists to window and door trim.
Their fasteners are unique and feature a zinc base coat and triple ceramic coating. According to Mark, that combination helps protect the steel while supporting smoother installation into challenging materials. He noted that the coating “does a great job with corrosion resistance and protecting that zinc layer and the steel itself, while also helping the fasteners go in well into tough materials.”
Reliability is especially important when crews are working from ladders or scaffolding in wind, snow or other difficult conditions. According to Mark, contractors appreciate being able to seat a K9 fastener on the drill bit and drive it with one hand, reducing the frustration of dropped fasteners and difficult positioning.
Connecting those jobsite advantages to the company’s message, Mark emphasized, “The whole K9 mantra is faster, stronger, safer. And it rings true on the jobsite.” When crews can complete a project without worrying about snapped heads, corrosion or callbacks, they can work more efficiently and deliver stronger, longer-lasting results.
