In a recent From the Ground Up episode, host Karol Weyman spoke with Barry Campbell of Campbell Contracting LLC and K9 Fasteners® about how innovation in fastening technology is helping contractors improve efficiency, safety and cost effectiveness in the field.
Sixteen years ago, K9 Fasteners was founded as part of a family-owned distributorship in Wisconsin by people who sold construction materials, including caulks, tools and fasteners. With a spirit of curiosity and constant improvement, the team identified a gap in the market. Barry shared, “They asked themselves these questions continually: how can we serve our current customers, and what are some opportunities to bring more value to the market?”
At the time, wood to wood fasteners were the norm, and by asking these questions, K9 Fasteners developed an alternative solution. “These diligent, hardworking Midwestern folks created K9 Fasteners to solve a problem: do we really have to spend that much money to get a quality fastener to the jobsite?”
According to Barry, the company’s approach centers on three core benefits: speed, strength and safety. “We have been proving these for 16 years: faster, stronger and safer,” Barry said, noting that contractors and suppliers alike recognize K9’s value over the years.
The speed advantage comes from a unique thread design that features an optimized thread angle, an aggressive thread pattern and a T17. “We engineered our T17 to make our tips sharper and start faster,” Barry stated. “We have raced our fasteners with our competitors’ fasteners, so it's measurable in time and efficiency.”
Strength is another key differentiator, driven by high-grade steel and a distinct ceramic coating. “Our unique ceramic chemistry is applied to a fastener, which gives that abrasion resistance and a low coefficient of friction,” Barry explained. “In independent lab tests, our low friction coating and durability outperforms our competitors.”
Finally, safety considerations make K9 Fasteners stand out, particularly through the integration of the bit and fastener design. “We engineered the bit and the bit pocket of the fastener together so that you can literally do a one-handed installation,” Barry said. “It’s safer for the technician who's installing it, and it's also safer for the surface of the wood.”
For contractors looking to improve jobsite performance, Barry encourages a hands-on demonstration: “I have 16 years of testimony, but it only takes about three or four minutes for you to see for yourself.”
