5 design trends to consider when building decks for outdoor spaces.

At the moment, one of the biggest trends in home improvement is creating outdoor living spaces. Things like decks and porches are an easy way to add to the unused spaces of properties and can increase the value of a home. But designing and installing a deck is no longer as simple as putting down beams, concrete and some planks. Decks today have come far in both form and function, as we’ve seen from companies like Deckorators

Here are five trends to keep in mind as you help clients create the deck of their dreams.

1 – Naturalistic design

This is a trend commonly seen across the design world. Homeowners are looking for connection with the natural world and are doing so by using natural, warm colors (browns and tans) as well as softened, curved shapes to achieve the look.

2 – Two-story spaces

For homeowners looking to make the most of a deck space, a double-decker is a great option. Not only does a two-story deck create plenty of space for  a homeowner’s cooking, hosting and relaxing needs, but it also adds an incredible “wow” factor to the home!

3 – Light it up

Incorporating lighting fixtures into a deck design is not only an aesthetically pleasing choice that elevates the appearance of the space;, it’s also a powerful safety and security feature. Things like wireless solar recessed lights on staircases and low-voltage LEDs are popular for use in outdoor spaces.

4 – Elevate the experience

Elevating an outdoor space doesn’t mean it has to be rugged and fixed to extreme measures. For clients interested in luxury or elegant design, spa-like amenities such as fire pits, saunas, outdoor showers and hot tubs are all great options to make a space feel tranquil..

5 – Technological touches

One of the biggest changes in deck construction over the years is the growing integration of smart technology. Some examples of this include retractable decks that cover pools in the offseason or awnings that extend when rain is expected.
