Where the grass is greener

Where the grass is greener

As the landscaping industry continues to evolve, one thing is clear: success is not just about what you plant, but where you plant it.

How’s your landscape business doing this year? In celebration of National Lawn Care Month in April, LawnStarter® ranked the 381 largest U.S. metro areas based on their attractiveness to landscaping professionals. The findings reveal surprising growth pockets, familiar standouts and practical takeaways for your business.

Florida: Fertile ground for professionals

It’s no surprise that Florida dominates the top rankings. With long growing seasons, year-round demand and a culture that values curb appeal, the Sunshine State placed 22 metro areas in the top half of the list.

The number one spot goes to North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton, thanks to an impressive blend of strong job availability, great access to sod and irrigation supplies and a nearly year-round growing season of 341 days. Not far behind, Sebastian-Vero Beach and Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater also offer attractive climates and business infrastructure. Tampa, for example, leads the U.S. in sod stores and sodding services (72) and ranks high in garden centers and irrigation supply.

Other emerging hotspots

Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas, lands at number three overall, driven by its massive population, strong spending on professional lawn services and high number of supply stores. With a projected industry growth rate of 16% and 292 days of growing season, Houston continues to be a major player.

The Pacific Northwest is also gaining traction, with Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue ranking number four overall. High income levels, multiple landscaping degree programs and a relatively temperate climate make it an attractive area for educated, tech-savvy landscaping entrepreneurs.

And while Utah metros didn’t break into the top five, they deserve a mention for their projected industry growth, which stands at 35.35%, currently the highest in the nation. Though smaller yards and tighter restrictions pose some hurdles, the sheer growth potential is hard to ignore.

Follow the green

This report offers several insights to stay ahead of market trends and grow your business:

  • Think long-term about location. Areas with long growing seasons and high consumer demand can offer more stable year-round revenue.
  • Plan for regulation and tech shifts. As the climate continues to change, an increase in electric equipment use and tighter water constrictions could change how you do business. The most adaptable companies will lead this change effortlessly.
  • Consider education and workforce development. Markets with access to landscaping programs and training facilities can be better for recruiting skilled talent.

See how your metro area fared in LawnStarter’s ranking and find resources to grow your landscaping business this season.
