In an episode of From the Ground Up™, Karol Weyman and Barry Campbell, president of K9 Fasteners, shared the origin story behind a company that was built around a simple question: How can contractors get better value without sacrificing quality?
According to Barry, the company was founded 16 years ago by leaders at a Wisconsin-based family distributorship who were looking for ways to better serve their customers. Rather than introducing another copycat product, they focused on understanding what contractors actually needed in the field.
Barry explained, “They asked themselves these questions continually. How can we serve our current customers? And what are some opportunities to bring more value to the market?”
That customer-focused mindset continues to shape the company's approach today. Barry said one reason he enjoys representing the brand is that he believes the company's success is rooted in real-world performance rather than marketing claims. “Everything about my job is really wonderful for me because I get to tell the truth,” he said.
Throughout the conversation, Barry emphasized three principles that he believes distinguishes the company's products from the rest: speed, strength and safety. Rather than relying solely on sales messaging, he pointed to field demonstrations, contractor feedback and side-by-side evaluations as the foundation of the company's growth.
“The truth is, we prove [our worth] every single day,” Barry said, describing how dealers, lumberyards and contractors evaluate products firsthand.
That focus on value traces directly back to the company's origins. Barry noted that the founders were determined to find a way to deliver quality while remaining cost conscious, a balance that continues to resonate with contractors looking to manage costs without compromising performance.
As the discussion continued, Barry moved beyond the company's history and into the specific design features and contractor experiences that inform its product development today.
In an industry where product decisions can impact efficiency and long-term performance, Barry said the company continues to rely on the same principle that launched the business years ago: listen to contractors first.
