SpreadRock®: Worth the investment

SpreadRock: Worth the investment

Transforming a patio with a granite stone coating.

The first thing that caught Eddie Smith’s attention when he saw SpreadRock® Granite Stone Coating was the price tag. He thought it was higher than he wanted to pay for a coating for his patio. Then he did his research…and changed his mind.

“After watching the Daich online videos and YouTube DIY videos, I loved what I saw,” says Eddie, a Florida resident. “The final finished projects depicted were beautiful, and I changed my thinking to see the product as more of an ‘investment’ for my home.”

The patio challenge

The story starts on the back patio of Eddie's home. The original owners had painted the concrete pad green to match the house trim. Unfortunately, they did not prep the pad well, because a few years after Eddie and his wife purchased the home, the paint began to bubble. While power washing the patio, the bubbles started peeling and produced a very ugly surface.

A big challenge for Eddie was he needed to find a product that was easy to work with, since he has Parkinson’s Disease. Once he reviewed the SpreadRock materials and videos, he had confidence he could tackle the project.

Spreading it on

For his next step, Eddie applied the SpreadRock product in the sandstone color he chose for the patio. He actually sat on a stool while spreading out the product (due to his disease) and says he had fun with the easy application. Once dried, he applied TracSafe® Anti-Slip Sealer to the project.

“What energized me was seeing how nice it was going to look when completed,” says Eddie. “Especially knowing how ugly this patio was before. The SpreadRock gave it a complete transformation. Now I’m proud to invite folks over to sit on the patio with me.”

Sharing tips

Eddie suggests that people double (and even triple) check their square footage calculations before purchasing products. He feels he used more of the product than might have been required, which led him to purchase additional SpreadRock and sealer toward the end of the project.

Another tip is not to “make due” with materials on hand. Invest in the tools needed and recommended for the job. As he put it, “Rather than purchasing the proper $20 handle for the squeegee, I used the handle on one of my garage brooms. It broke off and wasn’t flexible enough, not allowing me to spread the coating as thin as recommended. So, this is probably part of the reason why I needed to buy more product. It was a ‘live and learn’ experience.

Even with these lessons, Eddie is thrilled with the results of the project. He explained, "The important thing is the end result. My wife loves the refinished patio and that’s all that really counts for me! That’s saying a lot considering she didn’t complain about the cost after seeing the finished patio. I have to say, with this SpreadRock product, seeing it absolutely sells it!”
