North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA)

The voice of the deck and railing industry.

NADRA is made up of deck builders, inspectors, manufacturers, dealers/distributors, lumberyards, wholesalers, retailers and service providers to the deck and railing industry.

By working together we can be one voice for the industry and deliver a clear message to the consumer and the code development bodies. NADRA serves as a trade association with an emphasis on safe building practices and deck safety.

In its simplest form, NADRA helps all categories and professional levels of the outdoor living industry, with a specific focus on decking; connect and empower each other, by collaborating and working together as one voice to benefit the industry we serve.

Education

Deck builders, manufacturers, dealers/distributors, wholesalers, retailers, lumberyards, industry reps, inspectors
and providers in the outdoor living industry can all benefit from NADRA's education offerings. NADRA provides three types of classes: In person, live Zoom webinars and prerecorded on-demand.

We also offer some specialized training opportunities:

  • Deck evaluation and inspection program: This certification program will allow the industry professional the opportunity to employ the ability to safely evaluate a deck. A new APP is being been developed specifically for industry professionals as a comprehensive tool, to be used to properly assess the safety issues of a deck.
  • Decks done right: This virtual, two-day program has been developed for deck construction based on the entirety of the system. Too often code addresses individual components and not systems. Building codes are minimum requirements. And, the resistance to various forces may not be required.
  • Master Deck Professional CODE Certification: This four-part series was developed and presented by Building Code College. It iincludes four core building code courses and provides a comprehensive explanation of how International Residential Code regulates deck construction, from initial design to project completion. These courses support the North American Deck and Railing Association’s Master Deck Professional Certification program and are intended to prepare the audience for the four exams, respective to each course, that are required for NADRA member’s to earn their MDP-CODE Certification.
  • Building a freestanding deck: The following course is developed and presented by MT Copeland. It guides attendees through the steps of properly designing, framing and building a code-compliant freestanding deck and take these skills onsite from start to finished product with expert builder and craftsman Mike Guertin.
  • Wood restoration: This class is perfect for those just starting out, people with some experience and want to learn better methods, and employees that will not necessarily need the business aspects of a company that offers exterior wood restoration as a service. For the NADRA member this course will add revenue to your top line and keep you in front of your customer with continued revenue. It also gives you an opening to a new deck build or rebuild for your customer.

Deck Safety Initiative

Our mission for deck safety awareness continues far beyond Deck Safety Month®. As families from all over the world are spending more time together, they will be looking to get outdoors and make use of their space. Supporting NADRA’s DSM Campaign allows the association to continue to educate consumers, industry professionals and inspectors about proper deck installation and annual inspections. As NADRA members, you and your company are now positioned to use this message as a driving force to grow your business. You can also become an official Deck Safety Ambassador.

Deck for a Soldier

NADRA launched its Deck For a Soldier® program in 2007 when an inquiry came across the NADRA website. Sergeant Thomas placed an inquiry to NADRA member, Sawdust, Ltd. of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, through www.NADRA.org, in anticipation of scheduling a deck build when she returned home. Here, the idea of building a “Deck for a Soldier®” was born. This is a community effort that expresses our appreciation for the service and dedication of the men and women of our armed forces.

NADRA’s Deck for a Soldier® program has grabbed the attention of deck builders, manufacturers, suppliers, dealers and distributors around the country. It seems that benevolence is contagious. It’s a small way our industry can give back to those that give us so much – our freedom!
