In 2022, there were 54.9 million acres of irrigated crop and pastureland in the United States. These acres include some of our most profitable and crucial agricultural production, with 50% of the U.S.’s crop sales coming from irrigated land. There is no doubt that irrigation is a necessary part of our world, but it is an expensive one, both in terms of the farmer’s wallet and the natural world’s resources (between 2010 and 2020, irrigation accounted for 47% of the U.S.’s total freshwater withdrawals).
So, how do we ease the cost of irrigation on both fronts? Smart irrigation solutions. To learn more about the irrigation products that are saving time, money and water, we spoke to Augusto Pavola of WiseConn while at the 2025 Irrigation Show.
Augusto opened the conversation by sharing what WiseConn does. He explained, “WiseConn is an automation and monitoring system for agriculture irrigation systems. So we not only do the automation of the pump, but we also monitor environmental variables like the weather and soil moisture so farmers can make more personalized schedules for when, where and how much they irrigate.”
How do they do all this? It starts in software development. Augusto explained, “We make hardware and put it in our sensors. Those are then placed strategically, starting at the water source to measure how much water you are extracting into your reservoir and extending into the field to give you data on soil moisture variables.” Next, controllers (also using WiseConn hardware) are placed in your pump station in order to control the speed, variable frequency and amount of water coming out of that reservoir.
The result of having the control over your valves at the pump station as well as the monitoring data from the reservoir and field? An irrigation system that is custom tailored to you and your farm’s precise needs, allowing you to be more efficient water usage, saving farmers time and money.
