How modern water management technologies help contractors improve sustainability, save money and keep landscapes thriving.

In a new episode of OutdoorTalk™, host Karol Weyman sits down with Luis Andrade of Heritage Landscape Supply Group to discuss the smart tools and strategies available to irrigations and landscape professionals. This is a topic that Luis is very passionate about, as he shared:

I joined Heritage about four and a half years ago. Prior to that, I worked as a specification manager collaborating with cities, architects and engineers on some cool projects like green walls, smart water controllers, moisture sensors, ET flow meters – all of that good stuff that helps us conserve some water.

Why is it so important to develop all this technology around conserving water? First and foremost, it’s about sustainability. Luis explained, “Only 3% of the world's water is fresh water, and 2% of that is in glaciers. The other 97% is saltwater. So, in practice we only have access to 1% and that’s not a lot. In order to make sure our children and their children still have fresh, clean water, we have to be a good steward of that 1%.”

In addition to the environmental stewardship perspective, conserving water also comes with financial and aesthetic benefits. As Luis put it, “Smarter water management leads to healthier plants and long-term cost savings. Some of those savings are directly related to having healthier plants, as you’re not having to replace things as much, but it also saves you money on the water bill.”

So, what exactly do these smarter water management tools look like? A common one is getting a more advanced irrigation controller. Luis explained:

Most people just go to their irrigation controller and choose an amount of time, maybe 10 minutes, maybe 20 or 30 without any rhyme or reason. And what often happens is that they are running their sprinklers or whatever their irrigation is too long and excess water is running off, not going into the soil.

By getting a more advanced, “smarter” irrigation controller that has more precise timing capabilities or allows you to control settings remotely, you can better control the timing of your irrigation system, leading to a healthier landscape, a healthier planet and a healthier wallet.

A look at Heritage’s new 4-way, post-emergent herbicide.

Weeds are one of those things that aren’t a problem until they are. Every lawn care professional can probably recall a time when a customer called and needed weed removal done yesterday. Heritage designed their ForceOut herbicide for that very occasion!

ForceOut is a post-emergent herbicide that features four active ingredients: 2,4-D, MCPP, dicamba and pyraflufen-ethyl. This combination of powerful ingredients allows professionals using ForceOut to get faster and more precise results.

It is perfect for handling hard-to-kill weeds like dandelions, chickweed, clover, henbit, plantain and ground ivy. At the same time, it was engineered for safe use on everything from fescue and ryegrass to bluegrass, bermudagrass and zoysia grass. This makes it perfect for use on home lawns, golf courses, athletic fields and other high visibility turf sites. And the best part? It does its job fast! Results are visible in 24-48 hours, helping lower the number of complaints and callbacks while improving your reputation.

Additionally, ForceOut was created with the outdoor professional in mind. It mixes well with some liquid fertilizers (such as Droplex Xtra, Gulfstream Free, Droplex and Windsurf Pro) and is used at a low rate (specifically 48–64 oz/acre). At the end of the day, ForceOut is the economical, efficient and easy way to control tough broadleaf weeds.

Through key partnerships and initiatives, Heritage is uplifting outdoor living professionals around the country.

Founded in 2018, Heritage’s vision is to form a “network of the best independent distributors to provide exceptional customer service while increasing our value as a trusted growth partner to top manufacturers in the industry.” And they are well on their way to that, with their Pool Supply Group uniting 160+ locations across 36 states and the Landscape Supply Group boasting 32+ distribution brands and over 210+ locations across the USA. To learn more about this industry leader, Karol Weyman hosted Brittainy Klein and Rachel Mohorn for an episode of OutdoorTalk™.

Rachel is the director of marketing for Heritage Landscape Supply and Brittainy is marketing director at Heritage Pool Supply. The duo started by sharing some more context to who Heritage is and their mission, with Rachel explaining, “We're still in our infancy in terms of how many years we've been under the name Heritage Supply Group. However, with the acquisitions across the country, some of these companies have been around for over 100 years, and so the amount of knowledge is just incredibly deep. It really speaks to our slogan, Deep Roots, Shared Vision.”

And building a network through acquisitions is just one of the ways that Heritage is leading the outdoor industry. They are also creating a connected digital community through their partnership with OutdoorCoffeeShop™ and building bridges with other organizations and professionals outside of the outdoor industry with the Heritage Cares foundation. Brittainy explained a bit of what this foundation does:

Heritage Cares is how we give back to our communities and support those that are in need. From a pool standpoint, we throw a concert and host an auction at NESPA every year, and all the money that we raise on tickets and the auction goes back to Heritage Cares. One of our biggest initiatives is supporting Step into Swim, which is an organization that works to provide children in communities swim lessons.

Rachel shared what the landscape group does, saying, “On the landscape side, our big Heritage Cares initiative is Project Evergreen, which is an organization that works to expand green spaces across the United States (like parks, football fields, etc.) and operates the Green Care for Troops program which is all about helping military families care for their yards when their loved ones are deployed.”

Overall, Heritage is a leader in the outdoor industry not just because of the impressive numbers their networks boast, but because of the ways they go above and beyond through Heritage Cares and their online initiative.

Leaders discuss growth and culture, technology and community as OutdoorCoffeeShop™ brings outdoor industry professionals together.

Heritage Professional Products Group joined the launch of OutdoorCoffeeShop™ as a premier sponsor with a focus on connection across the outdoor trades. During the debut episode of From the Ground Up™, host Karol Weyman welcomed Rachel Mohorn and Brittainy Klein for a conversation centered on how growth and culture scale together while community remains the constant.

Founded in 2018 with the acquisition of CPS Distributors, Heritage began as a regional operation serving Colorado and Wyoming. Today, the company supports and distributes more than 40 brands through over 230 locations across 37 states. Rachel traced that expansion back to a deliberate mindset. “Growth only works if you stay grounded in who you are and who you serve,” she said, emphasizing that scale has never replaced relationships.

That philosophy shows up beyond branch counts. Rachel pointed to experiential events, the traveling XTV and the Heritage Cares initiative as ways the organization keeps teams and customers connected. “It’s about showing up locally and making sure our people and customers feel supported wherever they are,” she said.

Brittainy outlined a parallel trajectory on the pool side of the business, which launched in 2021 and now operates 22 DBAs across 150 locations in 36 states. She emphasized shared resources and learning opportunities for customers, noting that training, education and collaboration help contractors expand services with confidence.

Both leaders described OutdoorCoffeeShop as a natural extension of that mission. Rachel called it “a place contractors can go for trends, news and the real stories happening in the field.” Brittainy echoed that sentiment, highlighting the value of authentic voices and peer-to-peer insight that help contractors learn from one another.

As outdoor spaces become more integrated, technology continues to shape demand. Smart systems, sustainability and multifunctional design are converging, creating new expectations for contractors. Education, training and digital tools like Heritage Plus are helping professionals navigate efficiency, labor and regulatory pressures while staying focused on the customer.

Rachel Mohorn and Brittainy Klein discuss the importance of meeting contractors where they are – and the role of a digital space in that.

For the first ever episode of OutdoorTalk™, Karol Weyman sat down with Brittainy Klein and Rachel Mohorn to discuss how a connected digital platform like OutdoorCoffeeShop.com (OCS) helps them better connect with customers. Brittainy and Rachel both work at Heritage, the primary sponsors of OCS.

Rachel shared a bit of insight into Heritage’s sponsorship of OCS, saying, “At Heritage, we are always looking for ways to make our customers’ lives and operations easier... especially as they kind of go back and forth and between working in different markets.” Overall, as a distributor, Heritage’s goal is to be a one-stop shop that meets all the needs of their customers.

Brittainy highlighted some of the ways they work towards this goal:

We do more than just sell products. We have education at our branches and we attend trade shows...We developed Heritage+, which is our e-commerce site, because we wanted to make ordering as simple as possible for our contractors. We know that it’s not always possible to swing by the branch...Really, we want to create a network and support system that empowers contractors to find success in the field.

How does sponsoring OCS fit into this? Like Heritage, outdoor professionals are at the heart of OCS’ operations, and the site acts as a unique online home for these professionals to meet and learn together. As Rachel put it, “By working with OutdoorCoffeeShop, we’re able to meet our customers in the digital space and get them key information about things like the new proprietary products we’re developing.”

In response to this growing space, there has become a need for contractors and industry professionals to unite, grow and learn together. The solution that Brittainy, Rachel and Heritage have come to? Creating a connected digital space for contractors on OCS.

Heritage is the premier sponsor of OCS and has partnered with The Coffee Shops™ to build a platform designed for contractors and powered by community. The goal has always been to create a place where contractors' voices are elevated and information about product innovation, business growth and market trends is easily accessible.

In this inaugural OutdoorTalk, Brittainy and Rachel will discuss how they have worked with our crew to make OCS that place. Overall, if you are interested in engaging in cross-trade collaboration, growing your business, developing your team and more, this webinar is worth a listen or watch.
