Handyman Nimai Janes actually grimaced when he saw the project work ahead of him. A worn-out and weather-beaten porch, walkway and back patio that the homeowner wanted to give new life to with a product she had seen online.

While he had never used products from Daich Coatings before, Nimai figured that anything had to be better than the black and moldy concrete he was looking at. After reviewing the directions and surface prep suggestions, he got started on the weeklong project.

Step 1: Carefully pressure washing all the areas.

Step 2: Returning when the concrete was dry after the cleaning, Nimai taped off areas meticulously before starting the application of the Terrazzo® Decorative Granite Resurfacer selected by his client.

Step 3: The first coat was thick are required some heavy stirring to get all the granite particles moving in the container. Spreading the Terrazzo immediately changed the appearance of the concrete surface. After 24 hours of curing, Nimai returned to apply a second coat.

Step 4: To protect the finished product, TracSafe® Anti-Slip Sealer was applied as a protective sealant several days later to the entire surface. And then, 24 hours later he returned to remove the tape, revealing a transformation for the homeowner.

“Within just a week the Terrazzo uplifted the look of my home,” says Susan Schoch. “I chose the Café color because it accents my wood location. The new granite stone surface coating is absolutely perfect. Nimai did a great job and others in the neighborhood are already asking him for quotes to do work at their houses!”

Project prep tips for working with Daich Coating products.

There’s no substitute for going through all the surface prep tips and instructions before tackling a project. There’s a reason for the old adage, “measure twice, cut once.” At Daich Coatings, while our products are fairly easy to apply, they must have the right surface to “grab” onto.

Generally, our products don’t like a smooth surface. They need a textured surface to latch onto. That’s why we talk about the importance of etching in our online surface prep tips.

Outdoor prep… Take time to get it right

When you’re preparing concrete to accept Daich Coatings products, it’s not a good thing if the concrete is powdery or very smooth. You can solve that problem by wetting the concrete, pouring cleaner/etcher onto it and scrubbing lightly. Move it around with a stiff brush. It’ll fizzle. That’s good. Let it do that for a few minutes and then rinse the etcher away. This opens up the concrete pores.

When outside, you should follow up with pressure washing. A good thing is that the etcher also removes stains. In the end, the surface won’t be smooth any longer, so the new coating will have something to stick to.

Don’t let this happen to you

What happens if you skip this etching step? As one installer found out, big headaches can occur.

The installer simply washed a garage floor and then applied TracSafe Color Coat directly to the floor. The problem, which he discovered several months later, is that the garage floor was too slick and smooth. Less than six months after applying, the product started to peel away. While it was smooth sailing on the front end of the project, he’d now hit the rocky shores.

His next step was to carefully remove all areas of the product that were peeling away. Then he applied the cleaner/etcher to the exposed area. After cleaning it out and letting it dry, he had to re-apply the TracSafe Color Coat and then the TracSafe Sealer.

He then had to “feather” it into the existing floor, and the color match was not exactly the same because the garage floor had been in place for a year. Lesson learned … don’t skip a step on the front end.

Primer, coating and sealer from Daich Coating makes the job easier.

A few years ago, Karl Howard couldn’t wait for winter weather to be over. So the Aurora, Colorado, resident started building an outdoor kitchen for when the snow melted. He leaned on Daich Coatings products to help the project go smoothly.

Karl started by framing out the kitchen unit with non-treated lumber. He covered the framing with cement board. After taping the boards, he applied a thin set of Textured Primer in Dolphin Gray. This was done over the whole bar area to seal it from the elements.

Then came the real fun. He added SpreadStone Textured Stone Coating in Cool Gray to the exterior surfaces.

“I just rolled on multiple coats and it looked great,” says Karl. “The coating looks awesome, especially when the sun hits it.”

Finishing the job

To complete the kitchen, Karl rolled on Hi-Build Ultra Sealer to protect and preserve the finish. Then he added the crowning touch — a granite countertop.

Karl reflected on the whole project:

How this couple created a jaw-dropping artistic sun mosaic patio with Daich products. 

What Chad Wade and Kenlyn Huett lack in skills, they make up for with passion and determination. The result? The complete transformation of an ugly concrete slab into a jaw-dropping artistic sun mosaic patio.

“Kenlyn wakes up by sipping her coffee watching the New Mexico sunrise from that concrete area,” says Chad. “She wanted something with more style so we considered different tiles, products and designs. I promised her a sun mosaic.”

An IT person for a small hospital, Chad designed the patio mural using Microsoft™ Paint. He looked up patio images for inspiration and drew random lines. The sun is based off a video game series meme the couple enjoys.

Choosing a granite stone coating

As the design was finalized, Chad searched for products to bring the drawing to reality. He stumbled on the Daich Coatings website and contacted the company.

“I selected SpreadRock® Granite Stone Coating because it has the look, color and texture I wanted for the patio,” says Chad. “The reviews and walkthroughs showed it was something I could do myself. When I spoke with Paul Bordin at the company, he sent me samples. He worked with me on the project and helped me select the colors and order the correct volume of product I needed.”

Working with a purpose

Chad took three days off from work and got down to work. He began by prepping the 10’ x 25’ surface. First he washed it, using a Concrete Cleaner & Etcher, then let it dry. Next he applied a Textured Primer in Charcoal. Then he taped down the design with Stenciling Tape. Finally, he was ready to add the SpreadRock.

“I thought I’d knock it out myself mostly with a spray gun,” says Chad. “A few quick tests showed me the sprayer wasn’t going to work for the fine detail I needed. Same with rollers. Kenlyn had taken time off too and we just kept trying. Eventually we settled on small trowels and putty knives for the detail work. Once the project was completely dry we made sure it would last by using Hi-Build Ultra Multi-Purpose Satin Sealer.

Chad went on, "We wasted a lot of time with false starts and weather delays. And we learned that DIY projects like this are a lot more labor intensive than they appear up front.”

Let the sun shine!

In the end it took six days to complete the project. But it was worth it. The patio design has generated praise from friends and family, many who can’t believe they did it themselves.

Chad shared some closing thoughts: 

Rhe patio looks so good that people think it’s manufactured tile! I would absolutely recommend SpreadRock and Daich Coatings. While this was probably a bigger project than we should have tried as first time DIYers, the outcome was terrific.

Next up, I’m buying concrete step stones to make a path from the patio to the back gate. I’ll get a large amount of pavers to fill in the space in a zero scape rock garden along the side of my home. I’ll likely use SpreadRock on them as well. And, when we move someday in the future, we’re going to figure out some way to take that patio with us!”

With her vast Daich Coatings experiences behind her, we’re sharing her insights on working with our products.

You've done three very different Daich Coatings projects now. Tell us why you've selected Daich Coatings for both interior and exterior projects in your home.

For many homeowners, making upgrades to their homes can be overwhelming. Daich takes a lot of the barriers away. All three of the products we’ve used in our home have not only been something that adds value and use to our home but also doesn’t require a large price tag or time commitment to make these updates.

Which of your projects has made the most impact on your home setting?

Every one of these projects has changed how we use the different spaces in different ways. The kitchen project gave us a much better and more durable counter surface and started an upgrade process. In a similar way, the patio project helped unify the area visually and created the oasis we’ve always wanted out back. But the basement floor project really changed our space. Not only did it make the basement more of space we want to enjoy and use, not just storage, but the ability to mop and clean it makes it much more functional overall.

Aside from the personal prep work of moving items around your home (like getting the basement or patio ready), which of the projects was the easiest to tackle?

Once all of the items are removed from a space, all of the Daich products have been extremely easy to use and apply to the surfaces. Because it has the least amount of layers, I’d probably say the Terrazzo on the patio was the easiest to do so far. While I love the SpreadStone look in the basement, the layering of materials and grout lines was not as easy as the Terrazzo product overall. Sure, I had a bit of prep work with the power washing for an outside project, but each layer was a quick application and installation was a breeze.

Which of the Daich projects did you find the most rewarding?

Every single project has been rewarding and each space transformed by these weekend projects. The ability of the Daich products to take tired and old surfaces and give them a new life has been amazing. But watching an ugly kitchen counter turn into one that you can show off in photos may be one of the best feelings. The basement and patio have similar feelings, but the kitchen almost felt like bringing life back into that space.

Terrazzo has such a unique finish to it. Have you noticed that it brings more "life" to your outside patio area?

I may have said this in my article and even video about the patio project – the transformation even shocks me. Not only does it give the whole patio space a cohesive look, but it brightens up the area. It’s almost like you don’t expect to find that kind of flooring or space on a residential patio. When you come from the driveway to the patio, it gives you a “wow” moment every time. The different flecks of color in the Terrazzo play nicely with the decor out there, all while giving it a finished and professional look.

Does the TracSafe sealer on the Terrazzo provide you with an anti-slip finish to help prevent skidding and slipping?

Yes! This was a huge selling point for me. I have had multiple knee injuries over the years due to slipping on wet surfaces, and the thought of a slippery patio wasn’t ideal. I am out on the patio daily watering plants or taking the trash out and while you can’t feel grit or grip on the patio, even when wet there has been no slipping. Now, the biggest test will be when the snow comes later this year, but we’re not rushing towards that.

You seem to be a "Daich Coatings" household. Is there any other project that you're hoping to do in the future?

I’m always on the lookout for other projects and improvements we can do here and if there is a Daich product that can turn it into a weekend project, sign me up. Right now, however, we’re out of concrete surfaces or counters to resurface. I am always open to new projects so I’ll be on the lookout!

How SpreadRock® can be used to create a unique finish. 

Carl Schmitzer was unhappy with boring gray patio options presented to him by his condo association. So he took matters into his own hands. Now, after creating a unique stenciled patio, he’s the envy of his neighbors.

“Who knew plain old concrete could look so good?” says Carl, a Minneapolis resident. “I was inspired by videos on YouTube. When I found the SpreadRock® product online I knew I wanted to try this for myself. And I knew I wanted to make it uniquely mine by stenciling over the surface.”

Real stone coating

SpreadRock, a Daich Coatings product, provides an elegantly authentic speckled granite coating ideal for porches, steps, walkways and entrances. The product can also be applied to bathroom and basement floors, accent walls and pool decks.

The quick and easy standing squeegee trowel application means people can apply the product from a comfortable standing position. After rolling on a coat of Textured Primer and letting it dry for two hours, a squeegee is then used to apply two thin coats of SpreadRock. Once cured for 24 hours, everything is top-coated with a clear sealer.

Patience pays off

Schmitzer took his time properly cleaning and repairing his old concrete patio. He then added two layers of Raw Gray Textured Primer with interlocking bond technology. Once dry, he taped down the faux grout lines and applied SpreadRock in Anvil Gray. To assure success, he then applied a sealer followed by a masonry primer.

“Once the ‘foundation’ was finished I worked to personalize the patio by applying the stencils,” says Carl. “This requires a good deal of patience. However, if you can paint and do basic tile work, you can do this project.”

In addition to having patience, Carl advises others to watch videos to see how the process works. He recommends having two stencils and to clean them off after each use to achieve clear, crisp lines. Plus, you’ll need stencil tampers and rough surface tape. “This is a process that takes awhile,” says Carl. “Having a friend to help is a good idea.”

Stenciling success

To create the contrasting stencil work on his SpreadRock, Carl used the leftover Textured Primer and stucco masonry paint. Then he added several coats of sealer to protect his completed project.

“I really appreciate how flexible and easy-to-use the Daich Coatings products were for this project,” says Carl. “By planning out the work and moving ahead steadily I achieved exactly what I wanted — a unique patio design that’s anything but boring!”
