How this homeowner tranformed their home’s exterior with RollerRock®.

 “I’ve always been interested in art, inventing and trying new things,” says Greg Garrett, from Alliance, Nebraska. “If most people go left, I go right. I like new and innovative ideas, and this stone coating piqued my interest as a way to finish the stucco part of the house.”

Steps to success

Greg got it “right” when he decided back in 2006 to do something no one else had done before — create a unique, random color pattern by mixing and rolling on the real stone paint. He used a base coat of medium brown, and then mixed the base coat with three different colors to create different brick highlights.

“I purchased several large rolls of self-adhesive paper stencils with a running brick pattern,” says Greg. “Then I worked randomly over the entire stencil by dabbing the different colors on the house. It was very labor-intensive, but had extremely realistic results.”

Greg painted around the entire home exterior, transforming the house and creating enhanced curb appeal. He even continued the pattern up the fireplace chimney on the roof and used RollerRock on an 18-inch foundation around the bottom of the house.

“Most people believe we have real brick on our home,” says Greg. “For 14 years the RollerRock has held up great. I put a clear sealer over it every two to three years. Where there are minimal cracks I go back and repaint them with RollerRock. Overall, the product has held up great and given new life to the exterior of our home!”

Weekend project: Easy three-step transformation

How Daich's TracSafe® Anti-Slip Sealer prevents accidents. 

Happy five year anniversary to Mike Sheahan! That’s how long he’s been enjoying TracSafe® Anti-Slip Sealer on his patio.

A resident of Glendale, Arizona, Mike knows what it’s like to live in a hot area. He applied the TracSafe to his covered patio in August of 2021. That’s when the temperature was 95 as a morning low! Since then he reports that the product not only has worked well, but it’s actually cooler to the touch than his pool deck. Since his family almost lives in their pool, Sheahan wants to make sure they are protected when coming out dripping wet and proceed to the patio area.

Bringing safety home

Strong ROI for outdoor project.

After Lisa Young and her husband repainted their home exterior, suddenly the concrete perimeter foundation looked ugly. That’s when Lisa found SpreadStone™ Decorative Concrete Resurfacing Kits and got hooked on Daich Coatings projects. For the foundation perimeter, she chose the Lake Rock color of SpreadStone. Once that was complete, she moved on to revitalizing her front patio.

“I love the results and had fun using the Daich Coatings product for the foundation,” says Lisa, a resident of Boulder Creek, Calif. “I wanted to achieve different colorations, so I bought several individual containers to ‘mix and match’ my own color combinations. By using the bone primer and dolphin, ivory and cool grey, I was able to get the variety of realistic colors I wanted.”

Creating a flagstone patio

For her project, Lisa started with assistance from her husband for the pressure washing — then she did the remainder of the project herself. She explained, “After laying on the primer, I used painter’s tape to create the grout lines. First I rolled on, then troweled on, the SpreadStone. I wanted the texture of a flagstone finish.”

Relying on YouTube online tutorials, Lisa says the project was exceptionally easy. “The hardest part was actually laying the flagstone-shaped lines with the painter’s tape,” relates Lisa. “I was just impatient to get to the fun part! I used the roller for the first layer of SpreadStone, alternating colors. I then used a plastic trowel to add layers and texture. Finally, once that was dry I used a satin acrylic sealer. The result is stunning. It matches a similar flagstone in our backyard.”

Project = high ROI

The pre-mixed, factory-tinted SpreadStone coating system locks onto concrete to create a surface with a stunning decorative appeal and outstanding performance. Rollable stone coating with built-in primer.

Allen Stanfill knew his pool deck was in trouble. It was in really bad shape and needed some major help. However, he was ready to put in the work, and started by researching pool deck coating solutions on the Internet. The Oneida, Tennessee homeowner was impressed with what he saw under reviews for RollerRock®. He figured if the product was rated for use in driveways, then it should be good for his pool deck. And he was right. 

Careful preparation

Before the cans of RollerRock were ever opened, Allen invested time to carefully prep his pool deck. He pressure washed the deck twice. He waited for three days of pure sunshine to assure the concrete was completely dry. Then he blew the deck off again.

Next he applied two coats of Kilz 2 primer. Even though RollerRock has a built-in primer, because his deck was in such bad shape he wanted to take this extra step. After the primer was dry Allen measured out a thick stripe around the pool’s edge. He taped it off. Then came the RollerRock.

Rolling on RollerRock

“I applied four coats of Ivory for the striped area,” says Allen. “I want this level of coverage because I know the surface around the pool’s edge will get heavy usage. Then I retaped the Ivory paint strip so I could start applying the main color.”

After that Allen applied three coats of the Cinnamon RollerRock to the remainder of the pool deck. Once fully dry, he applied three coats the Hi-Build Ultra Sealer on the Ivory stripe area and two coats on the main deck. Next he applied two coats of Kilz 2 primer. Even though RollerRock has a built-in primer, because his deck was in such bad shape he wanted to take this extra step.

After the primer was dry Allen measured out a thick stripe around the pool’s edge. He taped it off. Then came the RollerRock.

Tips for success

Having never worked with RollerRock before, Allen was surprised at how thick the product is:

It’s a bit more difficult to roll on than you’d think. Imagine peanut butter at room temperature. You have to be sure to mix it well several times in the bucket and roll it on very consistently. The roller supplied with the paint is good for the first coat. After that I used a ¾ nap cheap roller for the final coat. It makes it a little smoother on the feet.

According to Allen, the RollerRock product makes his pool deck look 100% better than it did previously. “The difference is simply amazing,” says the homeowner. “Now we’re ready to start another project and we’ll use the same RollerRock in Cinnamon on the flooring for that project. This is a product that really makes a positive impact. It was definitely worth the investment.”

Step-by-step

James explains that creating the balcony flooring required three steps and three products:

We started with ElastoLock® rubber membrane coating to create a waterproof seal. This included using seam mesh, a roll of reinforcing fabric and ElastoLock spackle. This gives the balcony a leak-free system. Once that base layer was on, we used textured bone primer and then applied SpreadRock® Granite Stone Coating in a Sandstone color. It looks fabulous! Our clients fell in love with the color.

Then we decided to take it a step further. So, we used the TracSafe® Anti-Slip Sealer to clear coat and protect the Sandstone color. With TracSafe® we have the added benefit that if the balcony gets wet, it still won’t be slippery for the McKays.”

With the project finished, John and Darline now enjoy more light and fresh breezes into their Brentwood, California home. And, when the mood strikes them, they head out to the balcony to look at the mountains on their beautiful showroom-quality, slip-resistant surface!

Handyman builds business with stone coatings.

Handyman Nimai Janes actually grimaced when he saw the project work ahead of him. A worn-out and weather-beaten porch, walkway and back patio that the homeowner wanted to give new life to with a product she had seen online.

While he had never used products from Daich Coatings before, Nimai figured that anything had to be better than the black and moldy concrete he was looking at. After reviewing the directions and surface prep suggestions, he got started on the weeklong project.

Step 1: Carefully pressure washing all the areas.

Step 2: Returning when the concrete was dry after the cleaning, Nimai taped off areas meticulously before starting the application of the Terrazzo® Decorative Granite Resurfacer selected by his client.

Step 3: The first coat was thick are required some heavy stirring to get all the granite particles moving in the container. Spreading the Terrazzo immediately changed the appearance of the concrete surface. After 24 hours of curing, Nimai returned to apply a second coat.

Step 4: To protect the finished product, TracSafe® Anti-Slip Sealer was applied as a protective sealant several days later to the entire surface. And then, 24 hours later he returned to remove the tape, revealing a transformation for the homeowner.

“Within just a week the Terrazzo uplifted the look of my home,” says Susan Schoch. “I chose the Café color because it accents my wood location. The new granite stone surface coating is absolutely perfect. Nimai did a great job and others in the neighborhood are already asking him for quotes to do work at their houses!”

Project prep tips for working with Daich Coating products.

There’s no substitute for going through all the surface prep tips and instructions before tackling a project. There’s a reason for the old adage, “measure twice, cut once.” At Daich Coatings, while our products are fairly easy to apply, they must have the right surface to “grab” onto.

Generally, our products don’t like a smooth surface. They need a textured surface to latch onto. That’s why we talk about the importance of etching in our online surface prep tips.

Outdoor prep… Take time to get it right

When you’re preparing concrete to accept Daich Coatings products, it’s not a good thing if the concrete is powdery or very smooth. You can solve that problem by wetting the concrete, pouring cleaner/etcher onto it and scrubbing lightly. Move it around with a stiff brush. It’ll fizzle. That’s good. Let it do that for a few minutes and then rinse the etcher away. This opens up the concrete pores.

When outside, you should follow up with pressure washing. A good thing is that the etcher also removes stains. In the end, the surface won’t be smooth any longer, so the new coating will have something to stick to.

Don’t let this happen to you

What happens if you skip this etching step? As one installer found out, big headaches can occur.

The installer simply washed a garage floor and then applied TracSafe Color Coat directly to the floor. The problem, which he discovered several months later, is that the garage floor was too slick and smooth. Less than six months after applying, the product started to peel away. While it was smooth sailing on the front end of the project, he’d now hit the rocky shores.

His next step was to carefully remove all areas of the product that were peeling away. Then he applied the cleaner/etcher to the exposed area. After cleaning it out and letting it dry, he had to re-apply the TracSafe Color Coat and then the TracSafe Sealer.

He then had to “feather” it into the existing floor, and the color match was not exactly the same because the garage floor had been in place for a year. Lesson learned … don’t skip a step on the front end.
