Bring small spaces to life with sustainable containers, aquatic plants and running water.

Container water gardens are compact ecosystems that deliver texture, movement and sound with minimal maintenance. Whether you’re designing for a small backyard, patio or commercial setting, here’s how to build one that adds beauty all season long.

Start with the right container

Help your customer find the perfect watertight vessel like a ceramic bowl, stone trough or a pre-formed fountain bowl. For more layered designs, add a fountain bowl shelf to stagger plant heights or include a hanging planter for trailing terrestrial plants like impatiens. For a dynamic touch, install a decorative spitter – it not only adds charm but improves circulation and oxygenation of the water.

Pick the perfect plants

Aquatic plants bring both beauty and balance to your container water garden. Choose a mix of floaters, emergents and flowering plants based on your client’s climate zone and sunlight exposure:

• Dwarf papyrus (zones 8-10): Strong vertical structure with feathery tops; thrives in full sun to partial shade.
• Pickerel plant (zones 3-8): Bold spikes of purple or pink flowers; full sun to partial shade.
• Yerba mansa (zones 4-10): Delicate white blooms with pink-speckled cones; prefers partial shade.
• Water lettuce (zones 9-11): Velvety floaters that multiply quickly in shady spots.
• Helvola waterlily (zones 4-10): The smallest hardy waterlily, perfect for tight containers; needs full to partial sun.

Pro tip: Pre-pot aquatic plants in mesh aquatic planters and soil for easy arrangement and cleanup!

Add fish for life and motion

Introduce small, hardy fish such as guppies or rosy reds for mosquito control and to add visual interest. If you’re adding fish, install a container water garden filter to maintain clean, healthy water. These compact filters are easy to hide and keep the ecosystem balanced.  

Year-round appeal

Container water gardens require less daily attention than traditional planters – just top off the water occasionally to offset evaporation. Periodically thin out fast-spreading floaters like water lettuce to prevent crowding. For seasonal longevity, offer clients a maintenance service or plant refresh package.

Customize container garden kits or seasonal installations with specific plant palettes or themes. Upsell your clients a Zen retreat, tropical oasis or mini pollinator pond and add visual impact without the infrastructure.

Now is the time to refresh and maintain your customers’ water features.

April showers bring May flowers – and the busy season for outdoor projects. As homeowners prepare for backyard barbecues and summer gatherings, make sure their ponds and water features are ready to shine. 1 – Inspect and clean the pond pump.

2 – Clear out algae and debris.
